TYPEWRITER

Date of Release: 1870s
Headline Innovation: A faster, more legible way of writing

FEATURES:

  • QWERTY keyboard layout, designed to slow down typing and prevent jamming.
  • An array of keys which, when pressed, strike a ribbon coated in ink, to reproduce characters on paper.
  • Sometimes credited with helping women enter the clerical workplace.

PHONOGRAPH RECORD

Date of Release: 1897
Headline Innovation: Standardised Playing Speed

FEATURES:

  • 78 rpm speed
  • Acoustic recording
  • Made from shellac
  • Easier to store than phonograph cylinders.

POCKET WATCH

Date of Release: 17th century
Headline Innovation: The first pocket-sized wearable timepiece

FEATURES:

  • Designed to fit in waistcoat pockets, after the clothing was introduced by Charles II of England in 1675
  • Rounded and flattened in shape, unlike the heavy, cylindrical ‘clock watches’ that preceded it
  • An expensive, luxury item

35mm SLR CAMERA

Date of Release: 1930s onwards
Headline Innovation: The most advanced photographic preview system available

FEATURES:

  • Single lens reflex (SLR) system, which uses mirrors and prisms to allow the photographer to look through the camera lens, and view the image to be captured.
  • When the shutter button is pressed, the mirror moves out of the way, allowing light to pass through to the film.
  • Records images onto 35mm film.

COLOUR CRT TELEVISION

Date of Release: 1950s onwards
Headline Innovation: Colour TV

FEATURES:

  • Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) screen.
  • Analogue programme transmission, using signals transmitted over radio, satellite, and cable.
  • Programmes could be recorded onto video cassette, using a separate VCR.

ROTARY PHONE

Date of Release: 1890s onwards
Headline Innovation: User-controlled for quicker connection

FEATURES:

  • Rather than picking up the receiver and telling the operator who you wanted to contact, rotary phones could be controlled and connected by the user.
  • Digits arranged in a circular layout.
  • Initially made from metal, but often plastic after the 1930s.

  • Originally designed to hold up to an hour / 650MiB of uncompressed stereo digital audio
  • At the time of introduction, could store around 65x more data than a PC hard disk drive
  • Potential for applications beyond the music industry, such as CD-ROM and Video CD (a precursor to the DVD)

  • Touchscreen interface
